Can We Be Happy in this Anxious Moment?: Exploring Burnout, Isolation and Faith

Dr. Hill will be in dialogue with Dr. David Reetz, Director of Counseling and Psychological Services at RIT on increasing anxiety and isolation among students on campus. Dr. Hill will share insights from “The End of Adolescence” on students’ experiences with anxiety and loneliness and the desire for more time to figure out the pathway through college and adulthood. In addition, Dr. Hill will discuss a Christian perspective on pressing pause, finding your purpose and reducing anxiety.

Junior Family Weekend Keynote: Drawing Back the Curtain: What Juniors think about their Future

Nancy E. Hill, Ph.D. is The Charles Bigelow Professor of Education at Harvard University and a developmental psychologist whose research focuses on parenting and adolescent development. Professor Hill brings more than 25 years of experience working with parents, families and adolescents and the pathways through high school and into college. More recently, this work has been extended to understanding young adults’ experiences during the college years. Professor Hill was awarded the Ernest Hilgard Award for Lifetime contributions to psychology from the American Psychological Association. She was named to the National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine’s (NASEM) Board on Children Youth and Families. Further, she is President of the Society for Research in Child Development. Professor Hill is the co-author (with Dr. Alexis Redding) of the recently published a book, The End of Adolescence: The Lost Art of Delaying Adulthood (Harvard University Press, 2021), which focuses on the experiences and mindsets youth need as they transition from adolescence into adulthood. Professor Hill will share insights from this work on the challenges and opportunities as students carve a path from college to the rest of their lives. She will focus on the ways to support students in linking their passion and purpose to their professional goals and the pitfalls of closing doors too soon or holding them open too long. Guiding them on their path, Professor Hill will highlight the types of mentorship relationships that matter.
